A People Called
|
I have the announcement of my ordination hanging in a place that I see each morning. The cover reads: "Today I am given to you by God that I might serve you that together we might serve God." This has become the motto of my priestly ministry. In the Sacrament of Baptism we are united with each other as part of the community of faith in this common mission of serving our God. Within the parish we proclaim the Word and celebrate the Sacraments that build the community that supports, strengthens and encourages each of us to be faithful servants of our loving God. Together we pursue this great calling at St. Paul.

Len Grassman, Pastoral Associate |
|

I was born in 1935 and brought up in Syracuse, N.Y. My father died when I was 7 and my sister when I was 2. Our mother raised us with the help of relatives. Catholic schools were a big part of our early formation. In 1946 entered the Army and was in the 11th Airborne Div. In 1948 I entered Jesuit Lemoyne College and graduated in 1952 with a B.S. Ind. Rel. I went to work for General Electric, and in 20 years at G.E. I held numerous jobs all of which I liked. I earned an M.B.A. at Syracuse University during that time. In 1970 I moved to Wales, Wis. and joined St. Paul Parish. In 1972 I went to work for Clark Oil at their Corporate office in West Allis. Ten years later I joined Doerr Electric in Cedarburg. The work at all 3 positions were rewarding and challenging. And most important the people were most admirable. In 1988 I began studies at St. Francis Seminary which lead to a M. Div. in 1993. During that period I began my assignment as Pastoral Associate at St.Paul.

Cathy Smith, Pastoral Associate |
My name is Cathy Smith and I am the new Pastoral Associate here at St. Paul Parish. I began my position at St. Paul’s Church and School on August 1, 2012. I grew up in Milwaukee attending St. Adalbert and then St. John Kanty. I graduated from Hamilton High School in Milwaukee in 1983. I earned my undergraduate degree from Alverno College in December of 2006 in just 3.5 years. My major was Religious Studies and my minors were Psychology and Adult Education. I have finished my course work for my master’s degree in Ministry from Cardinal Stritch University. I have worked in many different positions in my lifetime, accounting, switch board operator, payroll clerk, retail department stores, grocery stores, school para-professional, nursing assistant, reservations manager of a resort, religious ed. secretary/assistant, wife, and mother. My husband Ken and I were married in April of 1985. We have four lovely children. My favorite Bible passage is: "God created humans in his image; in the divine image he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:27 I love this passage because it confirms I am a beloved child of God. No matter what others may say about me this is the truth and I always try to focus on this.

Sarah Daszczuk, Director of Youth and Adult Ministry |
Hi, I’m Sarah Daszczuk, Director of Youth and Adult Ministry. Though I was raised Catholic, it wasn't until my junior year of high school that I fell in love with Christ and the Catholic faith through my parish's youth group and Confirmation program. From then on, I knew that I had a passion for teaching the faith. I spent six years studying theology and ministry at Benedictine College and the Augustine Institute, where I also worked in campus ministry and student life for four years. I am excited to be back in my home diocese of Milwaukee and to be serving teens, young adults, and adults in my first parish position! "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior!" – Luke 1:46-47 I love this proclamation, given by Mary when she visits her cousin Elizabeth, before the birth of Christ. I strive to model my life on Mary, so I too may radiate the joy of God and bring Christ to all I meet.

Janet Shanahan, Director of Child and Family Ministry |
|

My life journey has led me down many paths to the position I have held for many years here at Saint Paul’s as the Director of the Child and Family Ministries. I grew up in a very Catholic family of ten children and attended Saint Pius X Grade School in Wauwatosa, Divine Savior High School (before it was DSHA) and I graduated from Mount Mary College. I am married to John Shanahan who has been the principal of Clarendon School in Mukwonago for 25 years. I taught fifth and sixth grade at Mother of Good Counsel School until I was blessed to stay home and raise our five children. I always thought I would return to teaching when the children were old enough but it seems God had other plans for me. I began my career with Saint Paul’s as a catechist for my daughter’s second grade class in 1995 and by 1998 I was the Director of Religious Education for Preschool through Grade Five. I have been responsible for all levels of Religious Education at some time or another but now happily direct the Preschool through Eighth Grade Programs and the Family Program. Since my life has always been about children, my own nine siblings, teaching elementary school, raising five children of my own, and being involved with the children of Saint Paul’s for over 16 years, I feel my greatest accomplishment is how I have helped children along with their relationship with God. It is therefore understandable that my favorite Bible passage is, of course, Matthew 19: 14: …but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these". Through my ministry at Saint Paul I have had the privilege of working with wonderful adults and children who have helped me along in my own faith journey. It is a privilege to serve the parish members of Saint Paul Parish. This is a wonderful faith community and my advice to new parishioners is to get involved in one of the many ministries we have that will help you live out Jesus’ mission to love and to serve others as He did.

Peggy Kolonko, Director of Music |

I am thankful everyday to be serving in a ministry I love so much. Since moving here from Escanaba, Michigan in 1984, I have served as Director of Music at St. Anthony on the Lake in Pewaukee and as Associate Director of Music at St. John Vianney in Brookfield. I serve on the ALMA board at the Archdiocese and recently served on the core team for the NPM National Convention. May the prayer life we share bring us closer to our loving God and Father.

Rosemarie Etzel, Business Manager |

It is truly a blessing to be a member of such a wonderful warm parish family and staff team member. My family joined the parish in 1970 after the first of our four children were born. I began working and serving in the parish office in 1982. Our children attended St. Paul School.
The Parish has grown in family membership since 1970 to approximately 1100 families. The parish budget and complex (over 90,000 sq. ft.) have also grown significantly in order to accommodate the many wonderful ministries serving our growing parish family and for outreach efforts outside our parish. Please feel free to contact our office with any questions or concerns. May God continue to bless our parish and families.

Kathy Havnen, Parish Secretary |
|
Most often, Kathy is the first person callers talk to. And she has the answer for most questions. Kathy, her husband Marty and their four children have been parish members for 30 years. For more than ten years, she was the parish music coordinator and had accompanied the adult choir for 20 years. When needed, Kathy is still called upon to play the organ at funerals, Sunday Liturgies and special celebrations.
