Future goals:
This parish has a large immigrant and first generation population. The majority of parishioners are people of color: Hmong, Laotian, Karen, Karenii, Latino, and African American. The Laotian, Hmong, Karen, and Spanish languages are heard and spoken as often as English at St. Michael's.
Many parishioners of our sister parish have low incomes; many are struggling daily to make ends meet. To provide help, their parish has pursued programs that focus on self-empowerment. A non-profit group called ACTS developed out of the parish outreach to the refugee families. Their mission is to promote affordable home ownership that fosters a low-income family’s ability to be self-empowered, thereby reducing community blight, neighborhood deterioration, and poverty.
Our brothers and sisters at St. Michael's have told us we are always welcome. Special liturgies at St. Michael's, such as the Feast of St. Michael or Palm Sunday, can attest to the rich, cultural faith experience at this parish. These liturgies are celebrated in the languages of the parish and there are songs, readings, and prayers in each of the languages.
Our parish supports families and individuals at St Michael's through our annual Giving Tree project and through financial support of their many programs for the immigrant population, many of whom come to our country to escape poor or dangerous living conditions. If you would like more information, contact Mary Drout at 262-470-3760, mdrout@wi.rr.com. Please pray for the parishioners of St Michael's. Our parish has a long tradition of praying for and supporting this inner city parish. As one of our Sister Parishes, Reformation Lutheran church invites you to its 2022 Good Friday Neighborhood Walk. Like the stations of the cross, the group will stop at sites in the community that demonstrate signs of despair and transformation. We will read Scripture, and the group will sing and pray together, lifting high the symbol of the cross in our heart of the city neighborhood.
This walk begins at 3:15 PM on Friday, April 15th after a brief time of fellowship inside the church located at 3806 W. Lisbon Avenue in Milwaukee. The walk lasts approximately an hour and will conclude at the church. The walk and church facility/restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The walk is suitable for all ages. Carpooling is a good idea; street parking is available.
We hope to see you as together we witness to God's presence in our community.
